With the help of both the morphine and general fatigue, Toad had
slept soundly. A little over two hours later, he woke, feeling almost worse than he had earlier. His mouth was dry and sticky, his thigh and side throbbed painfully, his whole body was generally stiff and sore, and he felt
groggy. The nap had left him more tired than rejuvenated, and he had half a notion to simply roll over and go back to
sleep. But he had a feeling that unlike earlier sleep would be hard to find.
So with a sharp hiss at the pull in his side, he pushed himself into a sitting position and switched on his bedside lamp. He felt like shit. A hot shower, however, he was sure would help. Yawning, he stood up gingerly, putting minimum weight on his injured leg. Once he was sure it would hold he stripped out of his pants and underwear and toed off his socks, tossing the soiled garments aside before limping across the room to the adjoining bath.
Toad squinted at the harsh glare of the bathroom lights as he turned on the hot shower water. Giving it time to heat up, he turned to the thin strip of mucous still covering the gash in his side. He knew it needed to come off, but he wasn't looking forward to removing it. Taking a deep breath, he began to pull, slowly working the hard, makeshift bandage off bit by bit. When it finally broke free, he dropped it unceremoniously on the floor and looked at the gash. In the light of the bathroom it looked long, but shallow, and no blood flowed from it. Satisfied, Toad turned back to the shower. Steam was pouring out of it, indicating that it was hot. So he turned up the cold to compensate and then climbed in.
The hot water felt good as it pounded down on his sore and bruised body, yet at the same time it burned painfully as it flowed across his thigh, other assorted cuts, and the mild burns on his legs from the flame throwers. Putting his head back, he rinsed out his mouth to try and get rid of the dry and gummy feel. He then turned up the cold water a little more and grabbed the shampoo off the ledge. Toad washed his hair quickly then grabbed a washcloth and continued to use the shampoo to wash the rest of his body. When he was finished, he simply stood there and let the water run over him.
