"I'm looking," she said around the rim of her glass, "for the places where people feel
safe." Swallowing the last of the screwdriver she set it back down the bar, and her head lolled to one side.
Toad reached out reflexively and grabbed Threnody's arm to steady her as she swayed on her barstool, head lolling from side to side in her drunkenness.
When the bartender stepped up to take her empty glass, Mort waved him off.
"I think she's done for tonight."
"I asked because I like you, Mort," she went on, turning to him with heavy-lidded eyes and the same smeared, exhausted smile. "I call you my
friend, I call you by your name, your real one. But I don't know you. Not really. I know Dominic, a little bit, because he saw me paint once and we talked
about dying, and that's his real name. But he's not quite like us, and there's that…distance. I don't want to say some things to him because
he's different, it might scare him, the way people won't look at my eyes too for long before they shiver and look away. You don't do that. So I
want to know you more."
Mort sat there stupidly on his barstool, simply looking at the woman beside him, unsure of what to say. Not unsure of
how to react, however, as instinct overtook him and he quickly pulled away, removing his hand from her arm. His eyes
locked on hers and he studied her face, looking for whatever angle she was trying to play. No one ever just wanted to
know him. There was always an angle, always something they were after. Even
Magneto and Mystique had their motives, had their uses for him, though he would willingly answer them all. But he could
find no such thing in Threnody, only blissfully ignorant interest. The sentiment made him uncomfortable, so he quickly
turned away, hiding his discomfort behind his beer bottle.
"Hardly seems fair," he told her after a moment, his tone slightly bitter, "when there can't be any turnabout. I tell you about me, but you can't really do the same now can you?"

"Hardly seems fair," he told her after a moment, his tone slightly bitter, "when there
can't be any turnabout. I tell you about me, but you can't really do the same now can you?"
"I can tell you what I know," she replied, nodding her head on a neck gone oddly rubbery…"Or the things I want. People always have lots of
those," she said, nodding wisely.
Toad didn't answer; the evening had grown slightly uncomfortable with Threnody's constant want to know. It
wasn't her questions that had gotten to him; it was the simple sincerity or lack of manipulation behind them. So he
hid behind his beer to avoid her questions until the bottle was empty. Setting the glass down with a clank, he pulled a
roll of money out of his pocket and flagged down the barkeeper, while the girl rattled on beside him.
"It's what people do. Want things. This and that. Like tonight. I didn't want that drink, and then I did, and now I even want more. But I
think..." she said, and her eyebrows lowered slowly in some attempt slyness, voice going hoarse in a whisper. "I might be drunk. I don't know. I
don't remember what drunk feels like, but if this is drunk, then I am it, and it is good… If I'd remembered how good it was I would have done it
Toad snorted a short laugh as he ordered one more beer, before paying off their tab. "You're definitely
drunk," he told her as he climbed off his stool, wincing at the pull in his side and thigh. He'd grown stiff
while sitting there and the torn muscles screamed in protest at his need to move. "That's why I need to be
getting you back, before you're too drunk to walk home on your own two feet." Picking up the fresh bottle, he
drained half of it in a single take. "Wait here, I'm going to the pisser."
Leaving both his teammate and beer at the bar, Mort limped back towards the restrooms. Pain flared through his thigh as
he walked, and he couldn't help but think that the trip back wasn't going to be pleasant, especially if Threnody was too tipsy to hold herself up
straight. Cursing his stupidity at having left the Sanctuary in his current state, Toad quickly relieved himself,
before returning to the barroom and Threnody.
Picking up his bottle, Toad finished off the beer, before turning to his Sister. "You ready?
